Schroffe Felsen, ein Mammut, Nebelschwaden: Das opulente Bühnenbild versetzt das Publikum in jene Höhle im Neandertal, in der 1865 das Skelett eines frühen Menschen gefunden wurde. Von hier geht der Blick nach draußen, wo das Mammut sich an eine Orgel setzt, spielt und singt. Ein Mann im Fellkostüm betritt die Höhle, macht Feuer und erzählt aus einem Leben, das im Jahr 1976 vor den Toren Hamburgs beginnt. Wenn er pausiert, lesen wir Sätze aus einem Vortrag Johann Carl Fuhlrotts über den Fund im Neandertal.
Die Geschichte des Mannes, er heißt Malte Scholz, ist die Geschichte einer Depression, seiner eigenen, und eines Selbstmords, dem seines Bruders. Mit jedem Schritt voran in der Höhlen-Zeit, in Scholz’ Erzählung, in Fuhlrotts Entdeckungen und in der Dramaturgie des singenden Mammuts, stößt GREAT DEPRESSIONS weiter vor ins Herz unserer Zivilisation. Liebevoll, mit sanfter Ernsthaftigkeit, mit Poesie und Witz und doch gewissermaßen unnachgiebig auf der Suche danach, was wir als Spezies wohl noch zur Verfügung haben an Gemeinschaftsgeist, ist GREAT DEPRESSIONS eine ganz eigene theatrale und philosophische Gratwanderung – bis zum großen Finale.
Jan Philipp Stange, *1987, studierte Regie an der Hessischen Theaterakademie in Frankfurt/M. Er ist Mitbegründer und Co-Leiter des Frankfurter Produktionshauses studioNAXOS. Seine Arbeit DIE TAGESSCHAU war beim Körber Studio Junge Regie und beim Festival Radikal jung zu sehen. GREAT DEPRESSIONS ist seine vierte Inszenierung nach Studienende und wurde beim Impulse Theater Festival 2019 gezeigt.

Rugged rocks, a mammoth, wafts of mist: The opulent stage set transports the audience to the cave in the Neandertal where the skeleton of an early man was found in 1865. From here the view goes outside, where the mammoth sits down at an organ, plays and sings. A man in a fur costume enters the cave, makes fire and tells the story of a life that began outside Hamburg in 1976. When he pauses, we read sentences from a lecture by Johann Carl Fuhlrotts about the discovery in the Neanderthal.
The story of the man, his name is Malte Scholz, is the story of a depression, his own depression, and a suicide, that of his brother. With every step forward in the cave age, in Scholz’s narrative, in Fuhlrotts discoveries and in the dramaturgy of the singing mammoth, GREAT DEPRESSIONS advances further into the heart of our civilization. Loving, with gentle seriousness, with poetry and wit, and yet virtually unyielding in the search for what community spirit we as a species probably still have at our disposal, GREAT DEPRESSIONS is a very special theatrical and philosophical balancing act – right up to the grand finale.
