Man kann sagen, CIVILISATION beginnt mit einem Fön, als ganz normaler Tag im Leben einer jungen Frau. Scheinbar, denn ihr Leben ist gerade aus dem Ruder gelaufen. Man kann sagen, CIVILISATION „ist viele Dinge gleichzeitig: Theater, Tanz, Performancekunst, erhellend und rätselhaft, ausgelassen und herzzerreißend“ wie es der Theaterkritiker Liam Rees 2019 nach der Uraufführung in Edinburgh tat. Das beschreibt eine Inszenierung, die unmerklich etwas erfahrbar macht, für das es erst einmal keine Worte gibt.
CIVILISATION spannt den Bogen schrittweise und ist geduldig genug, damit sich das, was es hier zu verstehen gibt, langsam im Betrachter ereignen kann – so verwirrend oder so fundamental, wie man es lässt, so warm und so rückhaltlos, wie es geht. Verblüffend ist dabei die theatrale Form, mit der Regisseurin Jaz Woodcock-Stewart und ihre künstlerischen Mitstreiter*innen das Publikum mit auf die Reise nehmen. Während Sophie Steer einen Monolog nahezu ohne Worte spielt, öffnen die drei Tänzer*innen ein Paralleluniversum, durch das sich Gefühle einen Weg bahnen. Und diese Dramaturgie ist so zwingend, poetisch, direkt und erlebbar, dass sie ein gewaltiges Echo erzeugt.
Jaz Woodcock-Stewart hat in London Schauspiel und Regie studiert, ihre eigene Gruppe gegründet, als Regieassistentin gearbeitet, Stücke geschrieben und Projekte mit Schauspiel- und Tanzstudierenden inszeniert. CIVILISATION ist ihre dritte eigenständige Stückentwicklung und Regiearbeit, bei der sie erstmals Schauspiel und Tanz zusammenbringt.

You could say, CIVILISATION begins with a hairdryer, with a completely normal day in the life of a young woman. Or so it seems, because her life has just gone pretty far off course. You could say, CIVILISATION “is many things at the same time: theatre, dance, performance art, illuminating and mysterious, hilarious and heart-breaking” as theatre critic Liam Rees wrote in 2019 after the premiere in Edinburgh. This describes a production that imperceptibly makes something tangible for which there are first of all no words to describe.
CIVILISATION draws the narrative arc step by step and is patient enough to allow what is to be understood here slowly occur in the audience – as confusing or as fundamental as you allow it to be, as warm and as full-on as possible.
