Hungry eyes ist nicht nur ein toller Name für ein Festival, das sich an der „Schnittstelle von Film, Performance und Bildender Kunst“ bewegt, es steht auch schlicht für ein spannendes Format. Ein Kunstwerk als Aufschlag und danach eine kleine Runde von Gästen zum Gespräch, so sieht das diesjährige Diskussionsformat von Fast Forward aus. Die Frage, wie und warum sich Künstler*innen mit gesellschaftlich relevanten Themen beschäftigen und mit welchem möglichen 'Mehrwert' sie das gerade in der Kunst tun, ist für eine Tradition, die so gern einen Unterschied zwischen „U“ wie Unterhaltung und „E“ wie Ernst macht, gelegentlich gewöhnungsbedürftig. Andererseits ist angefangen von den Höhlenzeichnungen unserer Vorfahren bis heute das Nachdenken darüber, was wir denn so treiben auf diesem Planeten, doch gar keine so schlechte Praxis. Drei Künstler*innen samt Gesprächspartner*innen gehen für Sie miteinander lustvoll ins Gesprächs-Match. Ca. 100 Studierende von 10 europäischen Theaterhochschulen in Deutschland, Griechenland, Großbritannien, Italien, Österreich, Rumänien, Schweden, Spanien und Ungarn besuchen die Veranstaltungen der diesjährigen Festivalausgabe online und diskutieren anschließend in der Kombination von je zwei Hochschulen ihre Eindrücke, Positionen und Vorhaben für die eigene Zukunft. Besonders für die junge Generation in der Ausbildung oder am Berufsanfang haben die Folgen der Pandemie spürbare Auswirkungen. Lockdown und Distanzregeln verändern nicht nur nachhaltig die Mittel der künstlerischen Arbeit, sondern reduzieren auch die Möglichkeit, als Publikum Theater zu sehen. Die diesjährige Festivalakademie ist ein Angebot, wieder anzudocken, Kontakt aufzunehmen und gemeinsam zu schauen, was die anderen machen.

Around 100 students from 10 European theatre schools in Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Romania, Sweden, Spain and Hungary will visit the events of this year’s festival online and afterwards discuss their impressions, positions and intentions for their own future in sets of two schools. The consequences of the pandemic are being especially felt by the young generation who are still in training or at the beginning of their careers. Lockdown and distancing rules don’t just change the tools with which they can work artistically long-term, but also reduce the possibilities of seeing theatre as an audience. This year’s festival offers the chance to link up again, to make contacts and together to have a look at what others are doing.

Wie treffen sich Menschen online? Wie gestaltet man virtuelle Räume, die zufällige Begegnungen und sinnvollen Austausch ermöglichen? Wie beeinflusst die Gestalt und Struktur, die Echtheit oder Unwirklichkeit der virtuellen Welt unser Verhalten online? Und das Wichtigste: Wie bringt man seinem Online-Avatar das Tanzen bei?
Mit diesen und weiteren Fragen beschäftigen sich Studierenden der TU Dresden und der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (HfBK) in einem zweiwöchigen Workshop des Immersive Experience Lab (IXLAB.io) an der TU Dresden unter Leitung von Matthew McGinity, Juniorprofessor für Gestaltung immersiver Medien an der TU und in Zusammenarbeit mit Stefanie Wenner (Professorin für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft und Produktionsdramaturgie an der HfBK), Fast Forward Kuratorin Charlotte Orti von Havranek und Ilja Mirksy, Dramaturg für digitale Medien im Theater und Doktorand an der Züricher Hochschule der Künste. Welche Entdeckungen die Studierenden dabei gemacht haben, welche Experimente sie gewagt und welche Vorschläge sie dem Festivalgästen gern machen möchte, werden wir im Laufe dieser Festivalausgabe präsentieren.

A cooperative project between the TU Dresden’s IXLAB, the University of Fine Arts Dresden and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden
How do people meet online? How can you design virtual spaces that allow chance encounters and meaningful exchange? How does the design and structure, the reality or unreality of the virtual world influence our behaviour online? And most importantly: how do you teach your online avatar to dance?
Students of the TU Dresden and the University of Fine Arts Dresden (HfBK) worked on these and other questions in a two-week workshop given by the Immersive Experience Lab (IXLAB.io) at the TU Dresden facilitated by Matthew McGinity, assistant professor for immersive media design at the TU, and in collaboration with Stefanie Wenner (professor for applied theatre sciences and production dramaturgy at the HfBK), Fast Forward curator Charlotte Orti von Havranek and Ilja Mirksy, dramaturge for digital media in theatre and doctoral candidate at the Zürich University of the Arts. During the course of this year’s festival, we will present the discoveries the students made, the experiments they tried out and the suggestions they’d like to make to the festival guests.

Once again this year there will a European festival jury, consisting of festival curator Kate Craddock, director Kamilė Gudmonaitė, theatre critic Janis El-Bira and Joachim Klement, artistic director of the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. On the last night, the jury will present a prize to one of the eight festival productions. The prize-winner(s) will receive an invitation to create a new piece of work at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. Before their last meeting, the jury will also meet actors from the theatre’s ensemble to talk about the productions they saw.
