Europa zu Gast in Sachsen: Mit acht Theaterinszenierungen aus sieben Ländern findet das europäische Festival für junge Regie Fast Forward 2022 endlich wieder voll und ganz vor Ort in Dresden statt. Rund 60 junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Ungarn, Schweden, Österreich, Spanien, Belgien, Serbien und Litauen sind für vier Tage zu Gast in Dresden, um zu zeigen, warum sie das Theater für bedeutsam halten. Sie werden uns ihre Geschichten mitbringen und uns vielleicht damit überraschen oder überwältigen, wie sie diese Geschichten auf der Bühne erzählen. Sie werden das zugleich ernsthaft und spielerisch tun. Sie werden uns zum Nachdenken anregen und zum Gespräch auffordern. Freuen Sie sich also mit mir auf vier Tage voller spannender Begegnungen und Perspektivwechsel aus Nord- und Süd-, Ost- und West-Europa.

Europe as a guest in Saxony: with eight theatre productions from seven countries, the European Festival for Young Directors Fast Forward 2022 is finally taking place fully and completely live in Dresden again. Around 60 young artists from Hungary, Sweden, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Serbia and Lithuania will be guests in Dresden for four days to show us why they think theatre is important. They will share their stories with us and perhaps surprise or overwhelm us with how they tell these stories on stage. They will do this seriously and playfully at the same time. They will make us think and get us talking. So join me in looking forward to four days full of exciting encounters and changes of perspective from northern and southern, eastern and western Europe.
We’re living in difficult times – in times when it is just as important and heartening to create contacts to our neighbours all around us. Fast Forward offers a wonderful opportunity to do this and gives us a glimpse of the theatre of the future.

Ein europäisches Festival junger Regie erscheint im Jahr 2022 mutiger und dringlicher denn je. Die andauernde weltweite Corona-Pandemie, der russische Krieg im EU-Beitrittsland Ukraine und die in dessen Folge sich bedrohlich abzeichnende Energiekrise lassen die beinahe weltläufige Selbstverständlichkeit früherer „Fast Forward“-Jahrgänge verblassen. Auf dem gesamten Kontinent blicken junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler in eine ungewisse Zukunft. Existentielle Fragen zu den ökonomischen, sozialen und ökologischen Grundlagen der Künste stehen drängend im Fokus. Welche Antworten können junge europäische Theatermacher geben?
Dresden ist prädestiniert für dieses Festival. Diskurse, die ihren Ursprung in internationalen Entwicklungen haben, prägen die Stadt und ihre von Kommune und Land getragenen Kultureinrichtungen. In 2022, a European festival of young directors seems more courageous and urgent than ever. The ongoing global Corona pandemic, the Russian war in the EU accession country Ukraine and the ominously looming energy crisis in its wake make the almost matter-of-course cosmopolitanism of earlier Fast Forward years seem to fade. All over the continent, young artists are facing an uncertain future. There is an urgent focus on existential questions about the economic, social and ecological foundations of the arts. What answers can young European theatre-makers offer?
Dresden is predestined for this festival. Discourses that have their origins in international developments are leaving their mark on the city and its cultural institutions, which are supported by the municipality and the state. Was ist eigentlich wichtig, damit eine Gesellschaft über die Runden kommt? Wir alle wissen, was Grundbedürfnisse sind. Aber reicht deren Befriedigung? Sind Werte, Menschenrechte, die für alle gelten und soziales Handeln ein Luxus, den man sich leisten können muss? Oder haben wir sie nicht genau so nötig? Es gibt aktuell vieles, für das uns die Zeit davonläuft. Und doch brauchen wir Zeit: zur Standortbestimmung, um unseren Widersprüchen ins Auge zu sehen, zum Denken, zum (Mit-)Fühlen, zur Diskussion und um Entscheidungen zu treffen. Es ist diese gemeinsame ‚Auszeit‘, die systemrelevant ist. Eine Theatervorstellung ist eine Möglichkeit zu einer solchen Auszeit. Es ist deshalb kein Wunder, dass junge Menschen in ganz Europa immer noch Theater machen. Und wie! Denn das Theater ist, wie es der Dichter Heiner Müller einmal sinngemäß formuliert hat, eines der Gefäße, in dem man menschliche Erfahrungen durch die Wüste (oder durch eine wüste Zeit) tragen kann. Und damit laden wir Sie ein, acht jungen europäischen Regisseur*innen und ihren Teams in diesen vier Festivaltagen zu folgen und sich von ihnen überraschen zu lassen. Seien Sie gespannt auf ihre künstlerischen Erfindungen, auf ihre Themen und Fragen. Und lassen Sie uns zusammen Zeit verbringen. Es lohnt sich. Und es wird außerdem ein Vergnügen sein.

What’s important for a society to get by? We all know what basic needs are. But is it enough to meet those? Are values, human rights that apply to everything and acting for the good of society a luxury you have to be able to afford? Or don’t we need them just as much? We’re running out of time for a lot of things right now. And yet we need time: to take stock, to look our contradictions in the eye, to think, feel (empathy for others), discuss and make decisions. It is this shared ‘time out’ that is essential to society. A theatre performance is one opportunity for some time out like this. That’s why it’s no wonder that young people all over Europe are still making theatre. And what theatre they’re making! For the theatre is, as the poet Heiner Müller once put it, one of the vessels in which human experience can be carried through the desert (or through a desert time). And with that we invite you to follow eight young directors and their teams on these four festival days and to let yourself be surprised by them. Be curious about their artistic creations, their themes and questions. And let’s spend some time together. It’ll be worth it. And it’ll also be a pleasure.
